This song was sort of a last minute thought. I had written it a long time ago and never really found a way to include piano that I loved. I didn’t really feel like it the magic happened till we decided to record it as an acapella last minute. The method however certainly wasn’t like that of Beethoven carefully choosing every note, instrumentation, and harmony in one of his masterpieces. Since it was more of a last minute thing I just went into the booth and recorded the track about 8 times messing with different kinds of harmonies. After some cutting and pasting and a fantastic touch of reverb from Mauro Ferreira our world class producer, Broken Soul emerged.
I think the reason I was surprised it turned out well was because the simplicity served the message as opposed to taking away from it. The song is basically a poem, like the kind of poem that you learned to write in grade school. And though each stanza can stand alone as their own thing they can also relate to each other. The simplicity of the poem with it’s cold empty message sort of turned a simplistically produced song full of cold and empty space. I want the beautiful empty feeling that I feel when singing it to be the last thing someone feels after taking their journey through the album which is why I put it last.
lyrics
I can hold your hand
But I can’t hold your heart
So let’s not even start
Let’s just let this go
I sleep through the night
But I can’t trust my dreams
And you can’t fix a broken soul
Can you fix a broken soul?
You can hold me here in this prison cell
You can lock the door you can make it hell
You can break my heart like they did to me
But something always sets me free
Something always sets me free
I can sing for days with a voice so clear
I can shout it out I can make them hear
On my hands and knees till my stories told
Gotta mend my broken soul
Can you mend my broken soul?
I can write you songs I can kiss your mouth
We can head out east we can drive down south
We can run away till our bodies ache
But we can’t escape ourselves
No we can’t escape ourselves
I can love you now till tomorrow comes
Like it always does, then I’ll have to go
Will you love me still, as I run away?
And can you fix this broken, fix this broken
Fix this broken soul?
