I remember after the relationship I wrote this song about ended I started humming it long before I ever wrote a word. One night I was sitting in the shower as one often does when life is rough and couldn't stop humming the first seven notes of the song. (Just a pentatonic scale for those of you who are musically inclined, think Mulan). I remember singing "If you love me let me go," for the first time and feeling that familar feeling of bursting with the need to get my feelings out through songwriting. I jumped out of the shower and headed to my guitar and wrote this song in a few minutes. It has been one of my favorites ever since and I have sang it countless times over the years at shows and different events.
I decided to put this song on our new upcoming album and you can hear it here with Lee Anderson on the drums and Jon Stokes on Guitar. This song as well as the others were edited and mastered by the amazing Jon Stokes and Mauro Ferreira.
lyrics
If you love me let me go
If you love me please hang up the phone
And if you ever really cared
When I open up my eyes will you please just not be there
If you love me leave me be
Get your ghost to stop haunting me
Every day she’s by my side
And she keeps me up at night, I just stay up every night
Chorus
But if you love me, if you love me
Wipe your face and dry your eyes
And kiss me one last time
If you love me say goodbye
I’ve been on this road before
Felt the heartache felt the getover
It gets better every day
Though I’ll be the first to say, you are never quite the same
If you fall in love again
Find my pictures in a box you kept
Have a smile on your face
As you think of better days, let your heartache melt away
(Chorus)
But if you love me, if you love me
Oh I keep on asking why, when you know I want to die
You know I just want to die
Wipe your face and dry your eyes
And kiss me one last time
If you love me say goodbye
