I wrote this track in between piano lessons while teaching at a school in Brooklyn. It is a song I had wanted to write for years (honestly the lyrics are along the same vein as Sam Smith's popular song Stay with Me), but hadn't quite found the words. One day they just poured out. The first part of each verse refers to a sort of made up fake hook up style relationship that one might be in just to try and forget someone else. The second part of the verses in this song are less obvious but I think more profound like the line "It (life) will offer you more but you'll settle for less, we keep waiting on someone that's freedom I guess." Ever since I wrote it I have played it at almost every show I've done and am excited to do a full blown produced version of it one day.
lyrics
It’s dark on these streets and it’s dark in my mind
You’re holding me close and our legs intertwine
The suns coming up o’er the avenue road
I’d better get up better make my way home
Life promises love it will promise you bliss
But it promises heartache so don’t be so quick
It will offer you more but you’ll settle for less
We keep waiting on someone well that’s freedom I guess
Chorus
But I don’t need you to love me I don’t need to be whole
You can fake your affection or cheat on my soul
I’ll pretend that I’m yours you pretend that your mine
You can be my love to pass the time
You can call me up Monday or Tuesday is fine
I’m just playing the changes just here keeping the time
We can share some affection or fight off the cold
But your kisses are band aids and they come off when you go
But it’s only today and it’s only right now
I could never keep hold of the future somehow
It’s something I know but I don’t understand
Beauty flying away at the touch of my hand
(Chorus)
And I know it was there wasn’t it God tell me it’s true
Once it was her but now it’s you
And I’m back here again and I’m holding you tight
Trying to get through the evening dear just get through this night
And pray for the day to get off of this coast
I keep holding you closer to fight off her ghost
