This is a song that even if I didn’t always know it, had been in the back of mind for years. I had marveled over the years as I went from relationship to relationship at how you could invest your life with someone and become completely intertwined and then one day have all of that suddenly not be there. When something like that ends you often no really longer have any sort of contact with someone who used to be an important part of your life, this can be sort of jarring. The one thing that you do always keep with you however how that time of your life changed you. In other words what you take from them is the new you for better or for worse.
Now You’re My Song is about the ability that our soul has to take a person or experience in life that we have lost whether it be through death, change, or the end of a relationship, and immortalize that time in our life by creating something. Creating art has always been part of the healing process for me. It is almost as if that by describing your burden it is infused in the art you are making, and it as almost as if the very moment you take your emotional burden and create something with it, it releases you and no longer weighs on you’re soul as it did. “Now You’re My Song” is about the ability that our souls have to heal through the simple act of merely expressing themselves. It is meant to say that even if you don’t have you’re lover, (or sibling, parent, old home, old job etc.) you will always have her song. This is to say you will always have them in that you will always have the you that exists because of them.
lyrics
I know you’re my lover
And I think you’re my friend
You’ve been my every waking hour
And the way my dreams end
So if our fire’s dying
Because of some storm
I’ll stand by our embers
And try to keep warm
I’ve been a wanderer
And I’ve been a thief
And now here in you’re arms
I’ve found some relief
You’ve been my happiness
The kind that feels wrong
If you can’t fix what’s broken
Just make it a song
You say I hurt you
You say I’m cruel
And I know I wanted more
But I know I’m a fool
So when I watch those tail lights
As your driving away
I’ll be hoping darling
They’ll be headlights someday
You took your body and made it a ghost
I took our last words and turned them to notes
And I’ll hear your voice dear, as their singing along
If you can’t fix what’s broken, just make it a song
And if you were wondering, I’m just getting along
I don’t have my lover, But I have her song
