I wrote this song as a love sick 19 year old starting a mission for my church and missing a girl I in reality barely knew. While I am now older and wiser I still appreciate the juvenile optimism and capacity to feel that I had as a young 19 year old kid.
lyrics
A postcard on the fourth of July
If you cut out my heart and you laid it on stone
You would find there a picture of the sea
And you would see me there drowning as the loneliest soul
And you would be rescuing me
If you send me a postcard of the shadow and moon
If the rain isn’t falling from the sky
I will be looking up through the darkness and gloom
Hoping that the moon’s shining in your eyes
Chorus
And I look for you moon, where have you gone?
Did you leave on that fourth of July?
If you see her out there through the darkness and gloom
Will you tell her I love her tonight
If you look through your memory to the future and past
You will find me standing there with a rose
I will calm all your fears, as the days turn to years
And you’ll never be standing alone.
And the Lord will protect you I know he always has
And he loves us more than we both know
And the skies not a stranger to the lovers that part
He’ll make it shine when we both feel alone
Chorus
If you wrote me a letter and I read it till I cried
Heard your words as I look to the sky
And I watched the moon melt from the love that I felt
When we had to say Goodbye
But the earth keeps on turning makes it way round the sun
And if it goes around two or three times
And if it brings things again to the way they were then
I will smile till the day that I die
