I wrote this song for my sister and brother in law on their wedding day. I had been commissioned by my mom to write something for their wedding, I grudgingly agreed silently grumbling that you couldn't just write a song, that inspiration had to come somehow and there has to be a reason other than throwing a party. The inspiration came when my mom, brother in law, and I went to meet Elise after she had been studying abroad in Jerusalem. We went to meet her at the western wall while the Jewish locals were welcoming in the sabbath on Friday night. As thousands of people danced and sung praising God and welcoming in the Sabbath, they hugged for the first time while Elise's friends stood around and cheered. The song Jerusalem came shortly thereafter and the first few bars and the piano riff still bring back fond memories. They are some of my best friends in the world and I am glad that I got to be apart of their special day.
lyrics
I saw you as the sun went down by the western wall
In the middle of a screaming crowd, and I held you like
I hadn’t seen you for 100 years, you know if felt like 1000
And everybody sang out loud for the brand new day
A day I knew I’d wake up whole, and as they prayed
I thanked the lord that our goodbyes, were in the past forever
(Chorus)
And we left our mark on Jerusalem,
but with a love like ours it couldn’t help but happen
And the city knew how much I loved you
And you became the place I’d go as I fell asleep
The only one I really know and I always think
That I was lost until I knew that we would be together
(Chorus)
(Bridge)
And I know it’s love when the bells ring
And I know it’s true when you look at me
And I know it’s you, and it was always you
This city’s seen a lot of things, it’s seen the walls come
It heard the disciples sing, and held the king of kings
But I don’t think we’ll be forgot,
Cause a love like ours don’t happen every century
